Birthday Treats

April 2017. A friend of mine, born on Christmas Day, was miffed about that concurrence (you can’t celebrate both events at full throttle on the same day). So he awarded himself an “official” birthday midway between two Christmases: 30th June each year. On that day he just sat back waiting for presents. Which he got. And, on Christmas Day, not a few birthday presents too! My own birthday falls in March so I have to be satisfied with one lot of presents only. Though this year I upped the quantity of those presents by awarding myself eight very special wines. But not for myself alone: they were shared with oenophile friends on the appointed day.[….]

Burgundy Part II : From Chorey to Gevrey Chambertin

AvatarJanuary 2016. DOMAINE TOLLOT BEAUT. Based in the hamlet of Chorey Les Beaune, this respected domaine has 25 hectares of vines and makes a total of 16 different wines, two of them white: a humble generic, Bourgogne Blanc, and an illustrious Grand Cru, Corton-Charlemagne. On the red side, at entry level, they make an excellent Bourgogne Rouge (which can improve for 4-8 years, sometimes more) while other reds include two different Choreys, two Savigny Premiers Crus, several Aloxe Cortons including two Premiers Crus, two Beaune Premiers Crus, and two Grand Cru Cortons – a Corton tout simple and Corton-Bressandes. Sixty Burgundies from 2008

History, they say, repeats itself though never in exactly the same way. The same is true of Burgundy vintages, with the repetition often occurring in pairs, at ten-year intervals. The 2008 vintage in Burgundy bears an uncanny resemblance to 1998, while 2007 is strikingly like 1997. Ten years before that, ’87 and ’86 followed a similar pattern.
